Homework and Study Homework should be viewed by students and parents as a normal part of the evening routine and as something which is consistent with life long learning. Place: Have a suitable study area. Try to use a quiet room with adequate resources and lighting. Time: Homework must be organised to balance out other commitments such as sport and leisure. The Staff at Cronulla High School recognises the need for a diary in which homework must be recorded. The diary can also be used for the purpose of encouraging regular and constructive communication between parents and teachers. As a guide, the following should be considered the minimum time spent each night on homework: Years 7 & 8 – 1 hour Years 9 & 10 – 1.5 hours Years 11 & 12 – 2 hours Students may require more time than this. Many students will devote more than this amount of time to their schoolwork. Homework and home study should be done on the basis of “a little and often” rather than as long periods of time done infrequently. Homework and home study should be spread over all subjects, with slightly more time being devoted to subjects that you find relatively difficult. Students’ Responsibilities: Parents should assist their children in developing a study program. By encouraging students to use the school diary to record all necessary homework details as well as other important school information, parents will be kept up to date with their children’s homework requirements. Teachers and Year Advisers will assist with any difficulties students may have in using the school diary. How to Organise Your Work: Students should take care to set out homework in accordance with the instructions given by the teacher. When preparing for topic tests or examinations, students will need to set aside extra time in their homework schedules for study. |
