BAND PROGRAM The Cronulla High School Band Program caters for musicians of all ages, abilities and interests, and provides many opportunities for students to enjoy sharing music in a friendly and supportive environment. The music staff remain committed to offering a variety of co-curricular instrumental and vocal ensembles that will provide students the opportunity to develop their musical abilities and potential. The ensembles offered in 2008 are: Ø Concert Band - all students, Years 7 – 12, who wish to continue learning and performing on their major instrument and who have at least 18 months experience. Ø Beginner Band - all students, Years 7 – 9, who wish to learn to play an orchestral/band instrument but have little or no experience. Ø Instrumental/Vocal Ensembles - all students, Years 7 – 12, who wish to participate in small ensembles (including Rock Bands) and who have at least 12 months experience. Ø Guitar Tuition - all students, Years 7 – 12, who wish to learn to play the guitar with a qualified guitar teacher. Ø Drum Tuition - all students, Years 7 – 12, who wish to learn to play the drums with a qualified percussion teacher. Every year these groups enjoy numerous performance opportunities, offering students valuable learning experiences that help to develop their musical skills while engaging in activity that reflects real world practice. Over the past few years, several rock bands from Cronulla High have auditioned successfully for inclusion in competitions such as Battle of the Bands and Youth Rock. CONCERT BAND The Concert Band evolved from modest beginnings as an instrumental ensemble in 2004. In 2008 the founding members of this ensemble provide the strong framework on which the current band is based and display fine leadership and support for the newer members of the band. In its short history, several students from our band have been selected to participate in various prestigious bands and music camps including State Senior Music Camp, State Junior Music Camp, Sydney Region Band and the Schools Spectacular, representing Cronulla High at metropolitan, district and state levels. The Concert Band rehearses after school on a weekly basis and performs music at an appropriate skill level – one that is both challenging and achievable. Students in the band are also provided with sectional tutorials during one lunch period per week with qualified tutors. This year the band will perform at various school functions and participate in a range of instrumental festivals and concerts in the wider community. The band is currently preparing to tour to Rotorua in 2009 to participate in the International Youth Music Festival. |
